I USA gik de interpose radioteknologi-selskaber ? ecumenical electrical?, Westinghouse og AT&T i 1919 sammen og formede ? radio set familiarity of America? (RCA) af frygt for u hideoutlandsk konkurrence fra Marconi?s datterselskab i USA og for at enes om patentudviklinger. Her kunne lytterne afkrydse, om de ønskede simple eller mindre af forskellige programkategorier og yderligere komme med særlige ønsker.6 Af undersøgelsen fremgik det, at folk ønskede mindre musik af ?højere? karakter såsom opera, symfoni- og kirkemusik og ligeledes mindre undervisning, som ellers ikke udgjorde uncorrupted end 6 % 7, hvilket måske kan opfattes symptomatisk for lytternes holdning til at blive ?belært? af radioen om rigtigheden af de aristokratiske præferencer. Denne holdning kan desuden læses af lytternes ?særlige ønsker?, som gik i stik modsat retning af det eksisterende programudbud og bestod af ønsker om stainless blæsemusik, gammel dansemusik, skuespil, sketches, let underholdning, kabaret m.m. Politikere og Radiorådet overvågede foredragene, og selvcensur blev etableret pga. denne debat som en naturlig del af arbejdet i en public service institution. 3.4 RadionyhederDa man, tilbage i Statsradiofoniens etableringsfase i den offentlige og politiske debat, diskuterede muligheden for, at en privat virksomhed skulle drive Statsradiofonien, var den trykte presse modstandere af dette, idet den frygtede en ny konkurrent, der kunne true dens position på markedet for nyhedsformidling. Den trykte presse støttede selvsagt den statskontrollerede model og helt fra starten og frem til 1964 overlod staten oven i købet ansvaret for nyhedsstof til Den Danske Presses Telegramudvalg som kontrollerede Pressens Radioavis og fungerede uafhængigt af Statsradiofonien (senere Danmarks Radio). Radioen blev en struktur-skabende faktor i hverdagen, da mange begyndte at synkronisere deres gøremål efter radioens nøgleprogrampunkter. Pressens Radioavis kl. 19 var dagens nyhedsopsummering, og når kl. embellish 12 på Københavns Rådhus, kunne alle lyttere synkronisere tiden derefter. Efter pres fra befolkningen, kombineret med opsigelsen fra BBC?s mest indflydelsesrige leder, John Reith, og konkurrence fra de amerikaniserede radiostationer ?Radio Normandie? og ?Radio Luxemborg?i 1930?erne, blev BBC efterhånden nødsaget til at sende mere populærmusik og flere folkelige programmer, ligesom det var tilfældet for Statsradiofonien, da Radio Merkur dukkede op. Den største forskel mellem Storbritannien og Danmark var, at den trykte presse i Danmark også kontrollerede nyhederne i radioen og dermed kunne undgå den værste konkurrence fra radioen, men i Storbritannien var den trykte presse og radionyhederne to adskilte institutioner, så her måtte den trykte presse tilpasse sig de ændrede markedsforhold.
